Observation and Experiment Term 1 in my MA at Cambridge School of Art

The first term of my Masters is officially over as I handed in all six of my sketchbooks nearly two weeks ago now. After a much needed rest I thought I would reflect upon the term and give an idea of the progress I made during it. This project is a foundation to the course and its aim is to get drawing and perfecting aspects of the practice such as tone, line, perspective, shape and colour.

Observation and Experiment

For my first ever project as a Cambridge School of Art student I’ll be completing the module ‘Observation and Experiment’ which involves very much what is stated in the title. For this we had to chose a theme to base lots of first hand, observational drawing around. I decided to focus this around my home town of Boston in Lincolnshire and hope to capture a sense of place through my images. This project is all about getting back into drawing from observation: something which by the end of my Ba I had been rather out of practice with!

Sketching Sooty

In preparation for lots of observational, first hand drawing in my MA I have been drawing my pet rabbit Sooty who is ten years old in August! The first image is one of my sketchbook pages using charcoal and the other more refined images are ones I actually did first hand also. I was pretty pleased with these even though he is a bit out of proportion and with a vacant expression but I’m sure these are things I will get to grips with in more time and with more practice!
